Finding the Balance: How to Leave Work when You Work at Home

Whether you are single or married with kids, one of the hardest things about working from home is figuring out how to separate your work life and your other life. Work is always right there, and it is so easy to pick up the phone and make a call, or to do just one more project for a client. If you have workaholic tendencies anyway, work can become your whole life when you work at home. It starts out innocently, with eating breakfast at your desk while you check your email…and before you shower or get dressed. You’ve gone from keeping a thermal coffee mug on your desk to keeping the coffee pot on your desk and coffee-making supplies in your desk drawer.
You keep cereal and energy bars in your desk drawer—and you work at home.
You’ve moved the refrigerator into your office.
You sleep in your office.
Your family hasn’t seen you in two weeks.

Seriously, though, it always takes some work to balance home life, social life and work life, but it’s even harder when you work at home. Here are three tips for keeping a little balance in your life:

Schedule your work time. On the calendar. Give yourself a definite time to start work and a definite time to end work. Just writing it down will make it more concrete, and make it easier for you to leave work at the end of your work day.
Establish a work area. Whether it’s a corner of the family room or an office, give yourself a place to go to for work. That helps keep work a little more separate from other activities, and gives you a place to leave at the end of the day.
When you are done working for the day, clean up your work area and put everything away. That helps you avoid the temptation to do just one or two more things later on.
