The Biggest Misunderstanding of Internet Marketing

Only read this article if you would like to attract thousands (or even millions!) of intelligent, responsive customers then this article is for you. Right now there is a misconception of the Internet Marketing circulating to surfers far and wide, stating that you can place a few free classified ads in the Web and then sit back and watch while herds of people rush to your site and drool over your ad. Or that you can up a web site anywhere in the Cyber World and you can sit back and do nothing while 60,000,000 surfers jump to your site and buy from you like crazy. (sigh) If only it were that easy.

Generating customers on the Internet is all about creating exposure for your business. The concept, "the more, the better" applies because exposure generates sales. It's just like traditional marketing, only far cheaper! Users of Internet advertising are supplied with a set of marketing tools just for doing business with them, including email, web sites, newsgroups, FTP, web classifieds, etc. But they're just tools, you've got to use them in order to make them work.

Three steps to generating business on the Net:

1. Develop a specific marketing plan for your business that outlines how you will design your web site to optimize sales, and how you will promote your web site in a way that will generate repeat visitors.

2. Determine where to place your web site so that you'll get the most for your money and maximize your exposure. Where can you place your site to hit your potential audience. Focus on what type of people you'd want to run into your site, as well as the type of people whom you do not want there. You wouldn't want to promote the importance of plastics and smog generating smoke stacks to a bunch of tree-hugging, flower picking, peace pushing, granola crunchers, would you?

3. Implement a lead generation system that will provide ongoing exposure for your business, products and web site. You need to be able to feed your site continual exposure, otherwise it will die. Ways to do that are daily posts on Newsgroups, press releases, post ads, etc. You should also, and this is a biggie, get free links from related, non competitive web sites in exchange for a link on your own site. That way you each bring new clients into each others sites, this is good because you'll get people from opposite sides of the spectrum. Say you have a site on Mexican Food Taco's and Burrito's, and you trade links with someone who also sells Taco's, but his taco's are for the more brave and risk taking. (Fish taco's, shrimp taco's, and shark taco's.) You would direct your adventurous people to his site, while his weak-stomached customers would be directed to yours. Learn to market in a way that best serves you and produces the most results.

After following those three steps you should be able to turn your average web site into a full blown TRAFFIC JAM!
